Long-term Substitute: Parent and Family Engagement Specialist


Salary based on education and experience, range: $25 to $30/hour

The Parent and Family Engagement Specialist serves as the school’s leader for family engagement by developing meaningful partnerships that strengthen the connection between home and school and promote student success. This position is responsible for creating, coordinating, and supporting opportunities that educate, empower, and engage families as active partners in their children’s education.

The Parent and Family Engagement Specialist leads schoolwide family engagement initiatives for grades K–12 while providing targeted attendance intervention and family support services for elementary students (grades K–5). Through collaboration with school staff, families, community agencies, and parent leadership organizations, this position works proactively to remove barriers to student success, improve school connectedness, and foster an inclusive school community where all families feel welcomed and valued.

This position requires a flexible work schedule, including evenings and occasional weekends, to accommodate family workshops, school events, and community engagement activities.

Family Engagement and Partnership (Grades K–12)

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve a comprehensive family engagement program aligned with the school’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Coordinate or support the coordination of family workshops, educational presentations, family nights, cultural events, resource fairs, and other engagement activities throughout the school year.
  • Collaborate with school staff, community organizations, and outside agencies to provide educational opportunities and resources for families.
  • Recruit, encourage, and support meaningful family participation in school activities, volunteer opportunities, leadership roles, and school improvement efforts.
  • Foster welcoming and inclusive environments that encourage strong family-school partnerships.
  • Gather and analyze family feedback to evaluate engagement efforts and recommend improvements.
  • Work collaboratively with families of students experiencing attendance concerns across all grade levels to develop strategies that improve school engagement and attendance.

Parent Leadership

  • Coordinate and support school parent leadership organizations, including:
  • Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC)
  • English Learner Parent Advisory Council (ELPAC)
  • Serve as the school’s primary contact for the Parent Connection Program
  • Parent Connection and other family engagement committees as assigned

Attendance Intervention (Grades K-5)

  • Monitor elementary attendance data to identify students exhibiting attendance concerns or with chronic absenteeism.
  • Meet with families to identify barriers impacting regular school attendance.
  • Develop and support individualized attendance improvement plans in collaboration with school staff and families.
  • Coordinate or participate in home visits when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with administrators, counselors, and student support teams to implement attendance interventions and monitor student progress.

Family Resource Coordination

  • Coordinate or support implementation of the school’s Backpack Food Program in partnership with Food Services to assist families experiencing food insecurity.
  • Identify and support students and families experiencing housing instability, homelessness, or other basic needs challenges by connecting them with appropriate school and community resources.
  • Coordinate referrals for food assistance, housing supports, transportation, clothing, healthcare, mental health services, and other community resources.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with community agencies that enhance supports available to students and families.
  • Promote family self-advocacy by helping families understand and access available services.
